Psalm 65

O God of Our Salvation

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A Song.

65 Praise ^(A)is due to you,^[a] O God, in Zion,
    and to you shall ^(B)vows be performed.
²O you who ^(C)hear prayer,
    to you ^(D)shall all flesh come.
³When ^(E)iniquities prevail against me,
    you ^(F)atone for our transgressions.
⁴^(G)Blessed is the one you choose and bring near,
    to ^(H)dwell in your courts!
We shall be ^(I)satisfied with the goodness of your house,
    the holiness of your temple!

⁵By ^(J)awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness,
    O God of our salvation,
the hope of all ^(K)the ends of the earth
    and of the farthest seas;
⁶the one who by his strength established the mountains,
    being ^(L)girded with might;
⁷who ^(M)stills the roaring of the seas,
    the roaring of their waves,
    ^(N)the tumult of the peoples,
⁸so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs.
You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy.

⁹You visit the earth and ^(O)water it;^[b]
    you greatly enrich it;
^(P)the river of God is full of water;
    ^(Q)you provide their grain,
    for so you have prepared it.
¹⁰You water its furrows abundantly,
    settling its ridges,
softening it with ^(R)showers,
    and blessing its growth.
¹¹You crown the year with your bounty;
    your wagon tracks ^(S)overflow with abundance.
¹²^(T)The pastures of the wilderness overflow,
    the hills ^(U)gird themselves with joy,
¹³^(V)the meadows clothe themselves with flocks,
    the valleys deck themselves with grain,
    they ^(W)shout and sing together for joy.

The Lord's Prayer

⁵“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love ^(A)to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. ^(B)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ⁶But when you pray, ^(C)go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. ^(D)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

⁷“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as ^(E)the Gentiles do, for ^(F)they think that they will be heard ^(G)for their many words. ⁸Do not be like them, ^(H)for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. ⁹^(I)Pray then like this:

^(J)“Our Father in heaven,
^(K)hallowed be ^(L)your name.^[a]
¹⁰^(M)Your kingdom come,
^(N)your will be done,^[b]
    ^(O)on earth as it is in heaven.
¹¹^(P)Give us ^(Q)this day our daily bread,^[c]
¹²and forgive us our debts,
    as we also have forgiven our debtors.
¹³And ^(R)lead us not into temptation,
    but ^(S)deliver us from ^(T)evil.^[d]

¹⁴^(U)For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, ¹⁵^(V)but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Fasting

¹⁶“And ^(W)when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. ^(X)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ¹⁷But when you fast, ^(Y)anoint your head and wash your face, ¹⁸that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. ^(Z)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

⁵And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, ⁶for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; ⁷and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? ⁸I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything ^(A)because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence^[a] he will rise and give him whatever he needs. ⁹And I tell you, ^(B)ask, and ^(C)it will be given to you; ^(D)seek, and you will find; ^(E)knock, and it will be opened to you. ¹⁰For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. ¹¹What father among you, if his son asks for^[b] a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; ¹²or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? ¹³If you then, ^(F)who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father ^(G)give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
